bio
Emma began learning the violin at the age of 3 with Sally Lisney and piano at the age of 5 with James Lisney. She was awarded a Government Music and Ballet scholarship to the Purcell School of Music at the age of 7 and stayed there until the age of 16, studying violin with Erik Houston and the piano with Christopher Ross and Emily Jeffrey. Emma passed Grade 8 with distinction at the age of 12. She led both the lower school and middle school orchestras during her time at Purcell as well as playing in many chamber ensembles.
At the age of 10 Emma won Mensa Young Musician of the Year where she
competed with students up to the age of 18 from all over the country.
Emma has won many music festivals throughout the country, including
locally the Hertford Outstanding Young Classical Soloist in 2004 (violin)
and Outstanding Young Jazz Soloist in 2005 (voice).
Whilst studying for her A levels at Haileybury in Hertford, at which
she was a music scholar, Emma performed Wieniawski’s No.2 Violin Concerto
and Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending with the orchestra. She also
had the chance to work with the Pavao Quartet, who were then Haileybury’s
residential musicians!
After leaving Haileybury, Emma took a Gap Year and took up a position
at Edge Grove School in Radlett as a Gap Student where she taught class
music in the pre-prep and directed the musical side of the nativity
and summer plays.
Emma is now studying music at Roehampton University where she is leader
of the university orchestra and chamber orchestra. She recently performed
Corelli’s Christmas Concerto with the chamber orchestra. Emma currently
studies jazz voice with Anton Browne and also regularly sings with the
university big band as well as being their vocal coach. In September
2007 Emma established GASP, a choir which sings and performs a variety
of music, from Soul to Country to Gospel. As part of her degree, Emma
had the chance to learn steel pans and now plays in the university steel
band, playing the cello pans.
In her spare time Emma teaches violin, piano, voice and music theory
to children from the age of 3 to 16.
